I live quite far from this restaurant, so I usually only come here on a road trip. The last time I visited was when my family had a driving test nearby. I come about once every six months, and every time there are new dishes to try—always a pleasant surprise! The service is also very good.

We came here for a family dinner on a heavy snow night. We were welcomed by the manager and servers. They are nice and friendly. The portion of the Chinese cuisine is large and the price is reasonable.

2025 It's been a long time since I've been to Scarborough's Ginger and Onion, and first time for dinner rather than dim sum. I was here for an early meal with a group of over twenty friends, old and new, before it got busy. Our meal started with Crab and Corn Soup, before moving on to Sweet and Sour Pork, and Roast Pork. Next was a dish of Seafood and Vegetables, Chicken with Ginger and Onion, a Mixed Vegetable dish, and Fried Rice. Dessert was Sago. Every dish had generous portions and tasted really good. We left with lots of takeout containers. The staff were very friendly and helpful, despite not being able to communicate very well in English (my only language). -------- 2020 There is certainly no shortage of places to enjoy dim sum in Scarborough. Ginger and Onion has been around for a while but is relatively new to this location. With MANY Chinese restaurants to choose from, this was actually my first time here, although several friends come here regularly. Hmmm, why haven't they invited me? On this day, we were entertaining a friend from Florida who had come to town for a recent wedding. There are far more, and better places in Toronto for dim sum, compared to Florida. Trust me! We decided to go ahead and place our order while waiting for some friends to arrive. They showed up just as we were about to hand in the order and they added a few more items, doubling up on some of the popular choices. The food started showing up soon after and just kept coming. What the heck did the latecomers add to this order? The table was soon packed with baskets of food! Our order included a lot of the popular dim sum items, like har gow, siu mai, spare ribs, bean curd roll, chicken feet, and more. Lots more, apparently! Everything looked and tasted good! Some items, especially the siu mai (steamed pork dumplings), har gow (steamed shrimp dumplings), and pai gut (steamed spareribs) were larger than most places I've been to. We were all getting pretty stuffed, with a couple of the larger dishes to come. There was still food on the table and with everybody feeling full, we cancelled the last two (larger) dishes. It still took about four large takeout containers to pack up the leftovers! Roll me out! A lot of the dishes were a bit larger than I'm used to, so was the cost, although not by much. I guess we got what we paid for, compared to other places. The food tasted good and the service was good. I'll be back...

On the outside, the place looks unassuming but inside holds wonderful surprises. We checked out Ginger & Onion for Friday morning dimsum early bird special where you can buy any S/M/L dishes for the low price of $5/each. They have the absolute largest siumai I have ever seen, and I've seen some really large ones. They are juicy, bouncy and delicious and are definitely the highlight of the meal. Even the hargow is also gigantic and full of plump and juicy shrimps. Some of the vegetarian dishes also offer delight. My wife loved the durian desserts. Overall the food was really good but the flavour is just slightly below some of our other favourite spots. Service is a little spotty, especially if you don't speak Chinese so it can be challenging trying to get sauces and stuff. But it's definitely worth it to come for their early bird specials which are good until 11:30am every day.

Ginger and Onion cuisine specializes in Cantonese Chinese Cuisine. We came here during dim sum. Early Bird Specials - CASH only. Mondays to Fridays before 11:30AM. Mondays to Fridays from 1:30 to 3:30PM. Saturdays and Sundays before 11:00AM. Tea per person is $2.50 each. Takeout container is $0.30 each. 12% tip surcharge automatically added to your bill. The waiter and waitress are attentive. They checked on our table constantly. They take our empty dim sum boxes away, fill up our hot water and tea pot at least once during our time there. We were taken care of. The waitress even mentioned about the 12% tip surcharge on our bill which we acknowledged. They can converse in Chinese and in English. Food was delicious. The dim sum portions were considered larger in size. The restaurant in overall is not too huge, so if they do get busy, one would have to wait for a table. It’s located in a plaza close to a supermarket and a medical building. So finding a parking spot could be challenging during peak hours. The disabled parking spots are located closer to the supermarket. There’s no push button or wave button to open the double doors upon entering the establishment. So people with mobility issues would find it a challenge to open those doors. The only thing they can improve is letting their customers know about their takeout container surcharge ahead of time. Especially when it is not a common practice amongst their competitors. Have something written or printed on their Menu would be best. Don’t try to hide it on your bill. Translate it properly in English. Your English speaking customers would appreciate the transparency.

Quaint little dimsum restaurant It’s early morning and we needed a place for breakfast. We stumbled on this small restaurant in an unassuming plaza. So we decided to give it a try. We got there about half an hour of opening.. Unlike larger dim sum places where you have to line up for a table, we had our pick of the tables in the restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised how little people there were. The wait staff were super friendly and were more than happy to strike up conversations with us. They asked us if we were waiting for the casino bus. Apparently, this is one of the pickup points. We used the paper menu to order a few dishes. The dishes came out relatively fast. The fried glutinous rice pork dumplings were really good. There were four of them. The fried skin were crispy and the glutinous rice was nice and chewy. The pork was not over seasoned, which is really nice. The next dishes came shortly after. The beef rice noodles were nice and bouncy. Super yum. The “shui mai” also came in four and were large. The taste was a bit too much on the salty side though. The steamed black bean spare ribs were just “ok”. Nothing too spectacular about them. The steamed BBQ pork buns were also just “OK”. Again, nothing too spectacular. The beef balls, also came in four, which is unusual because they usually come in threes. They were bouncy in texture as well. Super yum. The price was pretty expensive as three of us came out to around $60 after taxes and tip. I would recommend going on the weekdays as the prices are all the same for small, medium, and large dishes. It’s an ok place if you’re in a pinch. There are definitely better places to go though.

A nice little dim sum spot tucked into the corner of Alton towers plaza. I remember when these guys were located at the old market village side. Same name, but not sure if it is them. But would go to market village for the dim sum with them as well. This is a spot not many people have talked or spoke about which I’m surprised. The daily early special price is $4.99 per dish which is a decent price by today’s standards. They have all the classics plus some u pique ones. The siu mai is HUGE. Cut in half is probably other places regular serving size. There is also a durian crisp which I don’t normally like durian, but the FIL wanted to try it and it was not overly pungent in taste or smell and the durian was nice and creamy. The last item is the dough fritter rice roll. They level it up with some toppings which is really nice. Parking can be tough even with a fairly large parking lot. I would recommend just parking a bit further out towards the Tim hortons, but there’s many restaurants and a supermarket in this plaza so it can get filled up even close to the Tim’s. So if they happens, just be patient. Service was good. Nothing outstanding or negative to say, which for a Chinese restaurant is good thing. Great job overall!
